The Advantages of a Single-Floor Plan

There's a common misconception that a single-floor house is a low-budget option. It isn't. A single-floor house simply has one level, and lately this style has come back into fashion in a big way. Here's a closer look at why a single-floor plan is worth considering.

Easy circulation

The whole point of a house is comfort and a good fit for the people living in it. A single-floor home allows for easy circulation, of people, of air, of heat. With no complex vertical structure, the flow between spaces is naturally better. A lot of this comes down to the design itself, but done well, a single-floor plan works beautifully.

Easy to live in

Single-floor homes are simply easier to move around and live in. With no stairs, the house feels unrestricted, and that matters more as occupants get older. Retrofitting an elevator to a two-storey house is very expensive, often unaffordable. A single floor sidesteps that problem entirely.

Budget friendly

Building a single-floor plan is generally less expensive than other plan types, and they're easier to maintain too. A single-floor home can be made to look luxurious if that's what you want, but as a rule, they're more budget-friendly.

Energy efficiency

Single-floor homes need less energy to heat and cool. They're more compact, and they pair well with efficient heating systems and short plumbing runs. Temperatures stay more even, since heat isn't rising to an upper floor, which makes the home more comfortable and more environmentally friendly.

Easier renovations

Renovating a single-floor home is usually easier, and often cheaper, than working on a multi-storey house.

Open-plan living

Single-storey homes lend themselves to open-plan layouts, and that brings real benefits: better use of floor and vertical space, room for taller windows and vaulted ceilings, open sight lines, more natural light, and more space for entertaining family and friends.

Whatever plan you choose, check your budget and your available space carefully before deciding. And if you'd like expert input, get in touch.
